Constructing meaning, building the scaffolding, is care. And the level of detail shows the level of care.

Curiosity is the natural result of care. Curiosity looks at the scaffolding, sees the gaps, and longs to fill them. Curiosity is a drive to find the missing puzzle pieces.

What is crucial is that when the learner makes a discovery, there is a sense of ownership and mastery that is exhilarating and drives the learner to more, more, more. Discovery builds confidence and fosters a deep understanding of the underlying forces at play.

Discovery begins with curiosity, frustration, puzzlement. Something doesn’t fit, and the learner has to fill the gap on their own. This leads to hypotheses and experimentation: testing, reflecting, asking “what if.” At first patterns or regularities are noticed and then they are articulated.

The difficulty I have in constructing meaning is what gives said meaning such rich value to me. I put together your meanings because I care about you, because it is important to me to understand you.

Some minds hold detail the way some people hold hands: gently, reluctant to let go.
